chapter 5 Guns, Germs, and Steel response
The way radiocarbon dating works is when an object decays it leave carbon. Carbon has a 'half life' and when using certain isotopes it is compared to another living thing from the current time and is found by the date. The formula that scientist use to find out how old the object is, is t = [ ln (Nf/No) / (-0.693) ] x t1/2
2. These days you can travel to just about any country in the world and find a McDonald’s or a Pizza Hut. Not that you’d want to, but you could. We live in a highly diversified global economy, and the accessibility of a wide variety of foods is consistent across most parts of the planet. However, this was not always true. In the recent past the part of the world you lived in would dictate what foods were available in your diet. According to the table on page 100 - and your general knowledge about the world - what part of the world would you have wanted to live on if you were alive 1,000 years ago?
heres the table i remade
countries r on the left, food is in the middle, and animals r on the right.
southwest asia- wheat, pea, olive sheep, goat
china- rice, millet pig silk worm
mesoamerica- corn, beans, squash turkey
andes and amozonia- potato, manioc llama, guinea, pig
Eastern united states- sunflower, goose foot none
sahel- sorghum, african rice guinea fowl
tropical west africa- african yams, oil palm none
ethiopia- coffee, teff none
new guinea- sugar cane, banana none
western europe- poppy, oat none
indus valley - sesame, eggplant humped cattle
egypt sycamore fig, chufa donkey, cat
I would have wanted to live in southwest asia because it was the most edible stuff in it. I just think it to be edible. I have picky taste.

Guns, Germs, and Steel chapter two question
both group were Polynesian and were Maori. After the Maori had populated the Chatham islands they became the Moriori. After a few centuries the two groups became different types of people. The Maori on the North island developed more complex technology than the Moriori. The Moriori became hunter- gatherers and the Maori became farmers. This is what led to their fighting. Also different environment affected the way each groups lived and survived.

Chapter 1 questions, Guns, Germs, and Steel
Evidence that challenges this theory is that they would of had to had watercraft to reach australlia/new guina because it wasn't visible from the nearest island to it and it would be to far for someone to swim.
2. The lessons on what we have learned about the animals on the Galapagos Islands is that they had no predators to eat them a never died as much. They were so acusstomed to this living that when humans started to inhabit the islands that they wouldn't be scared of them. Could you amagine being able to hear those animals talk I bet it would sound like this. " hey what are you little guys. Hey cool sticks." next thing you know the animal is hanging over a fire getting cooked. Anyways next question. How do these animals apply to our thinking of the apparently quick mass extinctions of megafauna ( giant animals) in New Guinea and elsewhere?. Well my thinking is this. the big animals never really caught on to the fact that all the little dudes with sticks were actually humans trying to kill them. So then the animals all eventually became extinct. haha stupid animals....haha....
3. In what ways is the travel of Clovis decendants from North America to Patagonia ( southern edge of South America) in only 1ooo years immpressive. Well first the reason it toook so long for them to get to Patagonia is because they werenew to the area and they ended up wandering around until they finally got there. In what ways is it not immpresive? Well it's really the fact that they didn't know were the hell they were going.
4. What is "The Great Leap Forward"? Haha its sounds like some cheesy disney movie about hopscotch or an old movie that has to do with time travel. Anyways back to the question. "The Great Leap Forward" is really about humans migrating in other countries and islands. What aremy thoughts about it? Ummm I have none.

Dungeons & Dragons an evil killer!!!
Ok here's the story. Beatrice walks into her son billy's bed room and see's her son hanging by a rope in his closet. Then the paramedics come and takes her son away. Ok so now she see's that there is a stack of books that billy had been standing on and then kicked over and hung himself. And near the top not on top lies two D&D guides. So her conclusion is OMG D&D killed my boy! Then she calls a bunch of moms and finds out the billy was in a cult. And he had friends in the game but didn't really know him. So now she says that D&D an rpg (role playing games) should not be allowed to be played. She also said that she knew her son and that he wouldn't have done that. We'll beatrice guess what he did. I am sory for your loss.
My turn. Why the hell would you pop to the conclusion of OMG D&D killed your son. What other books were in the pile? Why if you "knew" your son did not know that he was part of a cult? Well I think that it might have not been D&D that killed her son instead it was maybe that beatrice didn't pay enough attention to her son. So then little billy's only place where he can feel belonging is in D&D. Or maybe it was pressure put on by his so called game friends? I don't think a game would cause her son to commit suicied. Ya ok so games can get addictive but thats why there is control or should be over the game time playing. Maybe thats what beatrice did not have and control her son's playing time on the game. Jumping to the conclusion of D&D killed billy is pretty ridiculos if you ask me.
Sincerely,
Derek

Thompson's Violin
Thomson’s Violin
One day, you wake up in hospital. In the nearby bed lies a world famous violinist who is connected to you with various tubes and machines.
To your horror, you discover that you have been kidnapped by the Music Appreciation Society. Aware of the maestro’s impending death, they hooked you up to the violinist.
If you stay in the hospital bed, connected to the violinist, he will be totally cured in nine months. You are unlikely to suffer harm. No one else can save him. Do you have an obligation to stay connected?
I would choose to stay connected to him and save him. It is not my obligation technically but I feel that as a human being it would be the right thing to do. Being in a hospital bed for 9 months would really get on my nerves and I would need to pass the time. I think I would talk to him about music, Christiantity, and other stuff. I don't know if I would except any bribes unless I really needed money. I know at some times I would want him to die so I could get out of the hospital and return to my normal life but I don't think I would ever actually mean it. I would also would want someone to do the same and to try and save me if that situation were to happen to me. So yes I would consider it to be my obligation to stay because of me being a human being.

Writing in reverse paper: The best day of his life
This is Greg Martin. Greg Martin is a 32 years old Christian man is married and has two kids . He and his family live in New York. Today would be the best day of Greg's life. This morning Greg woke at 5:00 am to leave for work and remembering that today was his 5th wedding anniversary he decided to leave a note to tell his wife he would be home from work early. Greg wanted to take his wife to a romantic dinner so they could get away from the kids for a few hours and enjoy their anniversary. He rode to work on the subway and arrived a little early so he decided to head to the Starbucks across the street to get a cup of coffee. While in Starbucks he found a hundred dollar bill on the floor. He asked who the money belonged to but nobody claimed it. When Greg finished his coffee he headed out of the Starbucks and crossed the street. In front of the huge building he worked in he saw a poor old homeless man begging for money. Greg decided that God would want him to give the hundred dollar bill to the homeless man. The homeless man was so overjoyed that he jumped for joy and earnestly thanked Greg for his over generous gift. The homeless man swore he would repay him someday no matter what it took. Greg smiled as he walked into the building and took the elevator up to his office on the fifth floor.
In his office he finds a note on his desk from the secretary, his boss has requested to see him first thing, Greg wonders why the boss might want to see him as he heads back to take the elevator to the corporate office on the hundredth floor. When Greg arrives his boss asks Greg to sit down and proceeds to tell him that he is getting a promotion to assistant manager. Greg is stunned and thrilled, he spends the rest of the day moving into his new office. At the end of his day Greg takes the elevator back down to the lobby and thinks "this day can't possibly get any better" but it does.
In the elevator is one of Greg's best friends. Greg asks how his friends day was. His friend replies " it was long." Then Greg tells his friend about his promotion. His friend congratulates him. His friend asks Greg if he wants two tickets to an Eagles concert for that night. Not only are they Greg's wife's favorite band but the concert starts an hour after his dinner plans with his wife. Greg asks why he has to get rid of them, his friend tells him that his wife had come down with a bad cold and he couldn't go without her.
Greg arrives at the first floor and thanks his friend for the tickets, and tells him he hopes his wife is feeling better soon. Greg heads out of the building and sees the same homeless man that he had seen earlier this morning. He walks over to the man and sees that the man is curiously paging through an old and tattered Bible. The man notices Greg and quickly stashes the Bible away. Greg asks the man if he understands what he was reading. The man says that it was about a man named Jesus but he doesn't know what it all means. Hearing this Greg decides to invite the homeless man to come to his church on Sunday. The man says he would be willing to go.
Greg hands the man directions and the address to the church. He then walks towards the stairs that lead to the subway and walks down them. He passes through the turnstile as he does everyday on his way to work and boards the trolley. He takes the only unoccupied seat in the car. When the subway makes its first stop an old and frail lady walks in and sees that there are no seats so she hangs onto a railing. Greg gets up and offers the lady his seat and the lady gladly takes it and thanks him. Greg gets off at his stop and walks the rest of the way home and when he's halfway home he realizes that he has left his briefcase on the subway and decides it's too late to get it back tonight so he continues to walk back home.
When he arrives home, he calls the babysitter and waits for his wife to get home. His wife arrives home and they leave the kids with the babysitter and get in the car and drive to the restaurant. While in the car his wife asks him how his day was, he says it was good. Then she gets curious because he keeps smiling so much. He tells his wife that she'll find out soon.
When they arrive at the restaurant and take their seats Greg tells his wife about his promotion. His wife is overjoyed and tells him how proud she is of him. Greg also shows his wife the tickets to the Eagles concert. After their romantic dinner they head to the concert while at the concert his wife is chosen to go up on stage and sing a song with the band. On their way home they talk about how great the concert was, and what a memorable anniversary this is. When they arrive home they see that the babysitter has gotten the kids asleep (on the couch) and he pays her.
The babysitter also runs into the kitchen and bring Greg's briefcase. Greg is surprised and asks where it was. The babysitter tells him that she had found it on the front door step when she was taking out the trash, she shows him a note left on the briefcase. Greg reads it silently to himself. The note reads ( found this on the subway it had your name on it) (p.s. I'll see you at church). Greg laughs and his wife asks him why he's laughing, he tells her about meeting the homeless man. After putting the kids in their beds Greg's wife says she going to get ready for bed and gives him a kiss. Greg stays for awhile reflecting back about his day and he bows his head in prayer. He climbs into bed and thinks to himself what a lucky man he is (this was the best day of his life).

Library of Dust: Story of Jonas Sharp

Jonas Sharp was your average healthy 32 year old male. He had a good job, friends, and family. Jonas was adventurous, and loved the thrill of a challenge. One day his whole life changed forever. One of his friends Rob Thomas mentioned an article about sea cave exploring and thought it would be cool to try it out. The next day Jonas and Rob headed off for the coast. Being inexperienced they took lessons and were told about the of sea caves in the area. The instructor had warned all the divers that they would all be going in the same cave one group of two at a time. Jonas being adventurous wanted to go into the deepest cave and convinced his friend that it would be fine to leave the assigned cave and go into the darker, deeper abyss. Halfway down his friend decided they shouldn't go any further but Jonas could not turn away he wanted to go deeper. They finally reached the end of the cave and started heading for the surface when all of a sudden the cave collapsed on his friend. Jonas tried with all his might to free his friend but it was useless. Jonas was running out of air quickly and his friend motioned him to leave him. But Jonas refused and then started to black out. The last thing he saw was the look of terror on his friends face as he became lifeless and sucumbed to drowning. When the rest of the group finally found Jonas he had been without air for six minutes. It was well known that being without air for that amount of time would cause serious brain damage. Jonas was in a coma and hospitalized for 3 weeks, when he awakened he could not speak and had lost most of his memory except for the moment of terror when the cave had collapsed on his friend. The doctors finally came to the conclusion that they could do no more for him and committed him to an asylum because he was considered insane and no one could care for him. Jonas was in the asylum for 15 years. Every night he would relive that experience, that moment and he'd yell and scream in agony for his friend. Jonas finally went mad and strangled himself to death. The canister above which holds Jonas's ashes for eternity, lives out the scene of terror that became his doom. The swirl of the sea and the dark hollows of the cave are shown and an image of a beautiful red fish that we hope is the spirit of Jonas, finally set free from his nightmare . Go to http://www.davidmaisel.com/works/picture.asp?cat=lod&tl=library%20of%20dust to see this canister and many others and more of David Maisel's photos.

To all the brilliant senators of the Texas House
I would just like to say how amazing the technique you guys use for voting for our laws. It truly is inspiring. Especially having to vote for your fellow senators. Truly an amazing talent. From having to rush from button to button before another senator gets to it first. The having to reach over the desk and behind you to press more buttons. The truly amazing thing about all this is you do it all without lunch breaks, bathroom breaks, and water breaks. Wow what type of an excuse is that! Honestly your voting for laws here! Do you think about how messed up that is. But I guess its those impressive black suits your wearing that gets you into the position. After looking at a video that shows what really goes on in those voting rooms it makes me just want say WHAT THE $%@#!!! Maybe the next time you vote you'll think wow I guess that kid was right but that's highly doubtful. I mean after all it's truly a hard job and I respect that. NOT!!! What a great example for the future leaders of this country. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eG6X-xtVask This is what I was talkin about! Thank you and have a nice day.
A very disappointed and astonished by this stupidity future leader of America,
Derek

The Death of Waldo
Its not blood its ink
Robbie opened the "Where's Waldo?" book. He searched for hours but never found Waldo. Robbie became frustrated and slammed the book shut. Robbie heard a scream and the crunching of paper. When Robbie opened the book he saw Waldo lying on the page, red ink flowing from his body. Robbie never read a book again.
